Australia Day Road Closures

KEY ROAD CLOSURES IN SYDNEY CBD & MILSONS POINT

Key roads around Circular Quay and The Rocks will close from the morning and in the evening to cater thousands of people attending various Australia Day events in the city and around the harbour. Roads will also close in Milsons Point for events in Bradfield Park.

Key road closures include:

  • 4:00 AM to midnight — George St from Essex St to Hickson Rd (George St between Hickson Rd and Lower Fort St will remain closed until 10:00 PM Sunday 27 January for the regular Rocks Markets trading)
  • 7:00 AM to midnight — Hickson Rd from George St to Pottinger St
  • 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM — Olympic Drive and Burton St in Milsons Point and Kirribilli
  • 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM — Hickson Rd from Napoleon St to Towns Place
  • 7:00 AM to 11:00 AM — Hickson Rd from Towns Place to Pottinger St
  • 3:00 PM to midnight — roads north of Bridge St including sections of Pitt St, Loftus St, Young St and Phillip St
  • 7:30 PM TO 10:30 PM — Sydney Harbour Bridge lane 4, Cahill Expressway lanes 7 and 8 and the Circular Quay overpass
  • 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM — sections of Broughton St, Kirribilli Ave and Pitt St in Milsons Point/Kirribilli
  • 8:30 PM to 10:30 PM — Macquarie St north of Bent St and various roads north of Hunter St

PARKING RESTRICTIONS

Special event clearway street parking restrictions will be in place around Circular Quay and The Rocks from 3:00 AM with additional clearways in place throughout the city from 1:00 PM until midnight. In Milsons Point, special event clearways will be in effect from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM on sections of Broughton St and Olympic Dr.

Clearways are strict no-parking zones, even for local residents or RMS Mobility Scheme Permit holders. Vehicles left in clearways will be towed and a fee applies.

Deliveries in Swanston Street and Collins Street will be permitted until 8.30am.

Line 109 Port Melbourne/Box Hill will operate between Stop 58- Box Hill Terminus and Stop 129- Port Melbourne Terminus via La Trobe St
Line 12 Victoria Gardens/St Kilda will operate between Stop 24- Victoria Gardens Terminus and Stop 143- St Kilda Terminus via La Trobe St
Line 48 North Balwyn/Victoria Harbour will terminate at Stop 7- 101 Collins St
8.00am – Line 11 West Preston/Victoria Harbour will terminate at Stop 7- 101 Collins St
Shuttle service between Elizabeth St and Collins St to Victoria Harbour

Flinders Street services (10.15am to 1.30pm)
Line 75 Vermont South will operate between Vermont South Terminus to Stop 6- Flinders and Russell St
Line 70 Wattle Park will operate between Stop 61 – Elgar Rd to Stop 6- Flinders and Russell St
A shuttle service (approx. 8 minute) will operate between Stop 4 – Flinders St and Elizabeth St to Stop D6- Flinders St West

Line 35 City Circle will operate between Stop D6- Flinders St West and District Docklands (formerly Harbour Town Shopping Centre)

Swanston Street services (8:30am to 1:30pm)
Line 1 East Coburg/South Melbourne will run between Stop 135- Bell St and Stop 8- Melbourne Central Station. East Coburg services to operate between Stop 32-Beaconsfield Parade and temporary stop in Southbank Blvd
Line 6 Moreland/Glen Iris – City Services to operate between Stop 133- Moreland Station and Stop 8- Melbourne Central Station. Moreland services to operate between Stop 53- Malvern Road to divert and Domain via Park St, Kingsway, Sturt St and terminate at a temporary stop in Southbank Blvd.
Line 3,5,16,64,67 and 72 all lines servicing the St Kilda Road corridor from southern termini will divert at Domain via Park St, Kingsway, Sturt St and terminate at a temporary stop in Southbank Blvd.
A shuttle service to operate in Swanston St between Stop 8- Melbourne Central and Stop 1- Melbourne University

Bourke Street services (9.30am to 1.30pm)
Line 86 Bundoora/Waterfront City will operate between Bundoora RMIT Terminus and Waterfront City Docklands Terminus via La Trobe St in both directions
Line 96 East Brunswick/St Kilda will operate between East Brunswick Terminus and St Kilda beach Terminus via La Trobe St in both directions
Shuttle service will operate in Bourke St in two portions (approx. 8min) – Stop 1- Spencer St and Bourke St to Stop 4- Queen St and Stop 7- Russell St and Stop 12- Melbourne Museum

Cyclists

Cycle paths will be impacted by these closures and cyclists are encouraged to find alternative routes.

ALTERATIONS TO TRANSPORT – DOCKLANDS

From 4.00am to 11.00pm Saturday 26 January Harbour Esplanade between La Trobe Street and Bourke Street will be closed to all traffic.

Trams (4.00pm to 10.00pm)

Line 70 and 75 will terminate at Flinders Street West (Wurundjeri Way)
Line 86 will terminate at Waterfront City Docklands stop 11
Line 95 will not be operating on Australia Day
Trams will not run down Harbour Esplanade during this time.

DOCKLANDS ACTIVITIES

6.00pm Entertainment (face painting, roving entertainment and market)
9.00pm Fireworks (approx. 12 minutes from Marvel Stadium roof)

OTHER EVENTS IN THE AREA

Other events will be taking place throughout the precinct, including Melbourne Star, District Docklands (formerly Harbour Town), Wonderland Fun Park, Library at the Dock, Newquay and Victoria Harbour Promenade.

STREET CLOSURES – DOCKLANDS

ROAD CLOSURES – 4.00pm to 11.00pm

  • Harbour Esplanade between La Trobe Street and Bourke Street closed in full to all vehicles except Emergency Services
  • Docklands Drive will be closed to entering traffic from Footscray Road. Entry from Dudley Street will still be open but limited to one lane

ROAD CLOSURES – 8.00pm to 10.00pm

  • There will be closures in place within the Docklands precinct along Docklands Drive, Pearl River Road and Waterfront Way
  • Little Docklands Drive will be closed to through traffic

TRANSPORT

Australia Day Victoria and our Docklands partners encourage patrons to travel via public transport. Details can be found on the Australia Day website or by visiting www.ptv.vic.gov.au.

TRAMS –4.00pm to 10.00pm

  • Line 30 running along La Trobe Street will remain undisrupted with additional trams in the evening to assist with departure
  • Line 70 and 75 will terminate at Flinders Street West (Wurundjeri Way) – they will be shunting at Flinders Street and Footscray Road and will NOT be running along Harbour Esplanade
  • Line 86 will terminate at Waterfront City Docklands stop 11
  • Line 95 will not be operating on Australia Day

TAXIS

All taxi traffic will be directed to the existing Taxi Rank on Bourke Street between Harbour Esplanade and Batman Hill Drive adjacent to Marvel Stadium.

CYCLISTS

All Cyclists will be asked to dismount if travelling along the water side of Harbour Esplanade due to the large increase of foot traffic
and as part of the event’s safety plan. This will be advertised with flashing message boards and static traffic management on the day.

PARKING

Marvel Stadium, District Docklands and various open air car parks will be operational. In the event of all car parks being full in the precinct, emergency road closures will be put in place to keep traffic congestion to a minimum.

BOATS

No boating exclusion zones will be in place and access to the water is unrestricted.

NOISE
